Earth Day...God's Earth

A blog from Overflo Volunteer, Mrs. Marjorie

Celebrating Earth Day today, April 22 is an opportunity for us to celebrate God's Earth.....

This beautiful planet He has created for us to live. Everything He put here is for our use and care. Everywhere we look it is His handy work. But we also see where they want us to "Go Green" and to "Live Green." What does it really mean to go green? How does God want us to live....Green? Genesis 1:26-Then God said, "Let us make man in our own image. They will be masters over all life-the fish in the sea, the birds, and all the livestock and animals. "Genesis 1:29-And God said, "Look! I have given you the seed-bearing plants throughout the earth all the fruit trees for your food. And I have given all the grasses and other green plants to the animals and birds for their foods. "Have we been good stewards of what He has given us? How are you going...living...green for God? This Earth Day let's thank God for this beautiful planet and all that He has given us, as well as doing our part in preserving it for the future.

God Bless!
Mrs. B

That's My Story - Episode 3

A blog from Overflo Student, Marissa

This past Friday, the 18th of April, I was involved in a car accident with my friend and her mother. We were on our way to the grocery store, driving down Palm Coast Parkway. At the intersection for Pine Lakes, a black Mazda made a turn without a green arrow. It was too late for my friend’s mother to hit her brakes and we basically T- Boned the other car. At first I thought we hit the brakes really hard, but when I looked up, I saw smoke and the airbags deployed. I was scared mostly for my friend and her mom because they were in the front seat. At first when I looked up my friends mom wasn’t moving, and then my friend panicked and jumped out of the car. Both of us were having a little trouble breathing due to the seat belt tightening. When her mom woke up, I guess, she got out of the car and immediately started calling the police. I was scared and what made it worst was that my friends’ lips were stuck to her braces. Luckily, we were all wearing our seatbelts and nothing worse happened to her. I started crying when she told me she thought she was going to die. I thought to myself, “What if that really happened?”

When the firemen and ambulance arrived, I calmed down a bit, but my friend was still in panic mode. She now had a bruised knee and a swollen hand. Her mother was short of breath because of the airbag and the pain from my chest moved to my left shoulder. The firemen started filling out their report and taking our blood pressure, I don’t know if everyone’s blood pressure was normal or not, they didn’t tell us. I finally called my step- dad and started crying over the phone, I handed the phone to my friend’s mom and she told him what happened. He told us he was coming right away and that I wasn’t to go anywhere or sign anything. While waiting we witnessed the firemen pulling the door of the Mazda open, when they did that I heard this ugly creak. The sound it made was the sound that I usually hear on TV when they’re at the sight of horrible accidents. I just now knew how serious this accident was. The driver of the Mazda came over to see how we were, he had tears in his eyes and he was bleeding. Later on I knew the reason he was crying was because the passenger of his car was pinned into the car. When I looked over, the firemen finally got her out, she was on a stretcher and had a neck brace on. I later found out she was air- lifted to Halifax Hospital.

We knew God was with us was when my youth pastor from my old church popped up out of nowhere. He immediately started praying with us and he didn’t leave until one of my parents came. I called my step- dad, and he told me that the roads were blocked off and they wouldn’t let him through, until he told them that his daughter was involved in the accident. One of the policemen escorted him to the sight and he said he wanted me to go to the hospital because of my shoulder. I went to the car to get my bag and I noticed a large piece of very hard plastic in the back seat. We still don’t know what it is from, but it might be from the dashboard. If I would’ve moved any other way, it might’ve hit me. We were really blessed that we did not bring my friend’s cousin with us, because the plastic was right on his car seat. my friend, her mother and I climbed into the ambulance and headed for the hospital. When we finally arrived at the hospital, the doctor was going to send my friend and I off to the waiting room, but her mother told them that we were minors and we weren’t going anywhere. The car accident happened around 10:00pm and we got to the hospital around 10:30 or 11:00pm. The doctor came in and took our vitals and an assessment of everyone. He ordered an X-Ray of my shoulder, my friend’s hand and her knee, and her mother’s chest. At around 12:45 he came back into the room and told us that I would need a sling, my friend would need a muscle immobilizer, and her mother would just need pills for the compression in her chest.

My friend’s pastor came to the hospital to see us because earlier we were at his church doing wonderful and enjoying an event called David’s Dance. He thanked the Lord that everyone was okay and nobody was seriously injured. When my step- dad and I were finally able to leave, my friend’s mother was feeling absolutely horrible. We assured her it was okay and that it was an accident. I finally got home around 1:45 in the morning and tried to go to sleep. Every time I closed my eyes, the whole accident and the sounds and the guy’s face and the smell and… EVERYTHING kept replaying in my head. I’m crying right now writing this because I can’t believe something like this happened to me. I already made the decision of waiting to drive. I still would like to get my permit, but I don’t think I’m going to use it. I just thank the Lord for watching over me and keeping everyone safe. Everything happens for a reason.

I want to try to end my blog with a question for you guys:
Have you ever been in a situation where you thought, “That would never happen to me”?

Exposed - The New Series Begins Thursday

Overflo's new series begins this Thursday, April 17 at Overflo Student Night. The new series is entitled “Exposed”, The Naked Truth About Sex. I realize any topic can be awkward to talk about if you don’t have a good game plan, and fewer topics bring that discomfort into sharper focus than sex. The big S. “The talk.” There are very few issues more daunting but I believe that our Overflo students need to hear about it through our student ministry rather then what they’re taught about sex in the school hallways.

Over three weeks, I will be asking three questions:

What was God thinking?
What went wrong?
What’s an Overflo student supposed to do?

I would like for everyone to attend this series. You will be challenged and encouraged!

See you Thursday at 6:45pm,
Pastor Barry

Limo Night - Just One Word....Phenominal!

Limo Night 2008 is now gone, but certainly not forgotten! If you were part of it, how much fun did we have? Uhhh, a ton I think! And if you missed it, let's recap...

First, we took a risk having it during Sprink Break, but that was the only night the limos were available! So we went for it. Now a lot of our regular attending Overflo Students were out of town, but we still had 38 students! Now here is the huge part...they brought 62 first-time guests! Unbelievable!

We had a great night. You should have seen the 2 limos. One black Excursion limo that was 40 feet long (sat 20 students) and another one that was 30 feet long (sat 12 students). The deal was if you brought 2 guests or more, you and your guests received a limo ride to Bruster's Ice Cream for a free cone! It was off the chains. We bought over 100 ice cream cones!

I will be posting some photos real soon!

Well, gotta run! The force is calling.

Stoked,
Pastor Barry

Y'all Sit Down and Shust Right Now

Now you are saying to yourself, "Shust is spelled wrong." I know, but it is actually correct because I want you to take a moment and sit down and "Shust" right now! This is why! At Aaron Shust's web, it says, "One short year ago, Aaron Shust sat excitedly in the crowd at his first Dove Awards to enjoy performances by many of the artists he had long admired. Today, just twelve months later, he’s returning to take the stage himself at his second Dove Awards show, carrying an armload of nominations that have followed his own smash hit single, “My Savior, My God.” Aaron’s debut release, Anything Worth Saying, sold over 140,000 copies in the last year while “My Savior, My God” was downloaded over 85,000 times on iTunes and maintained the #1 spot on the Web site’s “Inspirational” Chart for more than three months. With more radio airplay than any other song in 2006, “My Savior, My God” topped several radio charts and was named the #1 Song of the Year across multiple formats. "

Last night, Laura and I attended Aaron's concert and it was awesome! Of course, I had heard "My Savior, My God" and even own the CD, but hearing him was off the charts! Now here's the cool part, there is a young lady that is opening for Aaron on this tour and her name is Meredith Andrews. Laura travelled with Meredith on a singing team while at Liberty. So it was a little reunion for the two last night. In the meantime, we were able to enjoy Aaron Shust!

Overflo....y'all sit down and Shust right now by visiting his website at aaronshust.com. Read about him and then order his CD's. You will be glad you did!

Stoked about Shust,

See you this Thursday @ 6:45pm!

Another Troy Update

Thank the good Lord spring break is right around the corner. I need a break from school or else I might have to take a couple hostages. I think the family and I will be spending a couple days at Sea World over break. I get in free because I am a teacher and the whole "pay one day, go the rest of the year" deal appeals to the tight wad in me.

Don't forgot to invite friends to limo night on Thursday, April 10!!!! Be ready for some night basketball that night while you are waiting for your turn in the limo. Maybe we can do a three on three tournament. We could play two games at once with our two goals. maybe do two divisions or something like that. I dunno??!!??!

Well, I am outta here,
Dr. Troy
